No more SEZs

A parliamentary committee has sought an immediate freeze on fresh clearance of Special Economic Zones till the law is chnged to protect farmers and other stakeholders. The committee headed by Murli Manohar Joshi said undue haste in approving SEZs has contributed to the resistance against the policy.

"No further special economic zones should be noticed till the SEZ act and rules have been amended to meet public concerns", the report said submitted to Rajya sabha chairman. It said "There is no need to understand the cause of farmers' agitation and grievance.

It further suggested a max. area of 2,000 hectares for multi-product SEZs. There should be preferably a ban on the use of irrigated double-crop land for setting up SEZs. Waste and barren lands should be used. It sets limits on amount of land that can form a percentage of SEZ.
