IIT Mumbai is one of the premier engineering institute worldwide giving top quality engineers to India and the international industry. And similarly the fest of this institute, namely the TechFest is one of its kind and is known to be intense and the classiest of all the fest in India. So what makes it one of the most sought after event of the year and the biggest college fest in Asia.
Techfest, the Annual Science and Technology Festival of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), Mumbai, India is held every January over a period of three days on the IIT Bombay campus. Techfest started off on a small scale in 1998 with the aim of providing a platform for students to showcase their technical skills and in the short period of 10 years has grown to become Asia’s largest festival of its kind.

Over the years TechFest has seen over 3000 participants from the 1000 participating colleges across India along with teams from countries like USA, Singapore, Nepal, Iran, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Apart from student involvement, Techfest also sees more than 1500 faculty and corporate participants.

The underlying spirit of the Techfest has been ‘Technology is fun’ till date since its inception in 1998. The Techfest also has broad outlines in the form of competitions, lectures, workshops and exhibitions which has bee a standard feature in all of the Techfests. Besides Technoholix – Techfest at Dark which showcases technological entertainment at the end of the day has proved to be a major crowd puller and its quality has become of international standards to the extent that the kind of shows promised this year have never happened before in India. With the launch of the Techfest Trophy in 2003 the event has but sort of spiraled upwards in terms of skills, talent and the competition on display with the participating teams fighting it out for the much coveted trophy. And in 2004 the techfest was officially an international one with the introduction of the world renowned robotics competition, Micromouse for the first time in India. Since then there has been no looking back for this fest and it has mounted itself on the international calendar and is a globally followed event with international sponsors like Siemens, Cadbury, to this years sponsors in Microsoft and Google to name a few.

The fest has also imparted great knowledge to the students in the form of the lecture series, exhibitions and the quiz competitions. Techfest has seen many great personalities like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Honourable President of India and Mr. Rajat Gupta, CEO of McKinsey and Co., Dr. Amar Bose, Chairman of the Board and Technical Director of the Bose Corporation and Mr. Mark Shuttleworth, Second ‘space tourist’ and entrepreneur and innovator to name a few. The exhibition series has also been blessed by the Royal Society of UK which did so for the first time outside the country.

Worth mentioning is that the event has also managed to exhibit automobiles like the Mercedes-Benz SL 500 which was on display for the first time after its official launch a few days earlier at the Auto Expo in 2002. The F1 car ie. David Coulthard’s McLaren; the first time ever a Formula 1 racer was on display in a college fest in India in 2005.

The event only promises to grow and showcase much better talent, skills and technology. It will be apt to say that it is only a matter of time when the event will be the largest in the world.
